In the ever-changing world of architecture and design, one thing remains constant: the need for continuous learning and growth. Satisfying the growing calls for sustainability, keeping abreast of regulatory changes and getting to grips with evolving technology are just three reasons why investing in your learning and development is essential.

As a member of RIBA’s CPD Providers Network, Ideal Standard is authorised to deliver sessions that contribute to the requirements of ARB registration and RIBA membership. But CPD isn't just beneficial for architects; it extends its benefits to interior designers and contractors as well.

First off, let’s look at why CPD is important to architects or Skip to the CPDs

Why is CPD so crucial for architects?

ARB registration

Architect is a Protected Title under UK law. Anyone who describes themselves as an architect when involved in designing or constructing buildings, must be properly qualified, insured and registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB). The Building Safety Act, which passed into law in 2022, also gave the ARB new powers to monitor the training and development of architects and, to that end, members must submit their reflections on how their CPD each year has contributed to their ability to practice. The ARB does not set a minimum number of activities or hours but suggests members should do at least eight different activities. Its mandatory CPD topics for 2024 are “environmental sustainability” and “fire and life safety”, though it is left up to members how they cover these subjects in a way that’s relevant to themselves and their practice.

RIBA membership

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) requires a little more of its members when it comes to CPD. As of this year (2024), RIBA has dropped the minimum number of “learning points” and now asks members to record a brief, reflective statement on each CPD activity when they update their records on the body’s online tool. RIBA has 10 mandatory topics for architects to cover each year, which in 2024 has remained unchanged from last year. The current offering of CPDs from Ideal Standard can be applied to all of these in some way but here are a couple of specific examples: Our BREEAM and Water Conserving Design session satisfies the “sustainable architecture” topic while the Commercial Washroom Design Parameters CPD is relevant to the “inclusive environments” subject.

Elevating your expertise

Nothing stands still in construction so it’s essential to be up to date with developments, innovations and, critically, regulations to ensure you can provide clients with the best service. In terms of ensuring you’re on top of the latest directives, Ideal Standard has long-standing expertise on standards like Part M of the Building Regulations as well as Health Building Notes (HBN) and Health Technical Memoranda (HTM), which we share in our CPD sessions.

Helping with your project

Nearly half of architects surveyed by the construction media index said they attend a CPD because it is relevant to what they’re doing right now. Are you designing a hotel refurbishment or new build? Do you need a helping hand getting your head round the water conservation element of BREEAM? Do you need to satisfy the requirements of Part M in a school project?

Our Latest CPD offerings include:

Hotel Bathrooms and Washrooms

This session explores key standards and regulations governing guest bathrooms and public area washrooms. Topics include ensuring guest safety and accessibility, key regulations to consider when specifying for hotel bathrooms and washrooms, product design and durability, sustainability and cutting running costs. The aim of the session is to ensure architects and designers deliver compliant, comfortable and beautiful projects for their clients.

Hotel Room

BREEAM and Water Conserving Design

With sustainability a constant priority for architects today, this session looks at issues around water conservation in buildings. We take a holistic view of designing water management systems and explore together key ways of reducing water usage. The session looks at the standards and regulations relating to water conservation in architecture, and focuses on the requirements of BREEAM, as well as including a section on grey and rain water recycling.

Commercial Washroom Design Parameters

A well-designed washroom adds to the positive experience of a building for all users. Ensuring every type of need is catered for also results in a building that is accessible to all. This CPD session will help participants to gain a comprehensive understanding of the various regulations relevant to commercial washroom installations and how to apply them to ensure accessibility for all.
